Interactive Environmental Education in Alyki salt marsh

Interactive Environmental Education in Alyki salt marsh

by Archipelagos / Friday, 18 March 2016 / Published in Education, Island Fauna, Littoral Ecosystems, Marine Conservation, Press Releases, Terrestrial Conservation

Last Saturday, researchers of Archipelagos’ terrestrial team, organized a pilot educational programme in the salt marsh located in Aliki, Psili Ammos, in Samos. 35 students attended this educational day from various primary schools on the island.

Our goal is that the students learn about the rare species that live in this particular wetland through various interactive activities and educational games. We also aim to help them understand the importance of nature conservation for all residents of this special island.

The children became young researchers for the day using various scientific tools. They recorded the bird species that are found In the wetland and used a checklist to classify them, they observed the small invertebrates that live in the water and tried to locate chameleons among the vegetation. As always collection of debris from the beach and the wetland, is something that is always carried out by all. In the coming months, Archipelagos’ researchers will continue to offer similar courses to many schools of the Aegean islands. Our main aim is to help cover the large gap of environmental education is the Greek schools’ curriculum, but also to inspire children to love, respect and appreciate nature.
