In dedication to World Animal Day, we came together with our partners, World Animal Protection Nederland, at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Netherlands. Α session was devoted to the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary, which is currently under construction. Speakers included Tim Grandjean and Anastasia Miliou from Archipelagos Institute, led by Thierry Reniers, co-director of World Animal Protection, Netherlands.
Once the sanctuary is complete, it will be of unique global importance as the first of its kind veterinary clinic and rehabilitation centre for sick/injured marine animals, such as dolphins, seals and turtles. Though most importantly, it will be an area capable of hosting formerly captive dolphins. Thus, providing a positive solution to the long-term problem of dolphin abuse in captivity, for purposes of forced performances, by this lucrative industry.
The Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary will combine multiple innovations with high standards of animal welfare, in a pristine and highly biodiverse bay, located far from human disturbances. The on-site building already operates with a zero-carbon footprint which, powered by renewable energy sources, while its water supply comes from a solar-powered desalination system of low energy requirements, and with a complete grey water reuse system.
Just a few steps before its completion, the AMLS is already sparking worldwide interest as a Greek endeavour of global importance, combining innovation both in the welfare of biodiversity and environmental conservation.
Our hopeful completion of the process is unfortunately hindered by the endless bureaucracy and the efforts of some to cause obstacles where possible. More details on this will follow in a separate post.
